The goal of The High School Course Exchange is to widen the range of courses available to small rural school students and to home school students. Although that is our focus, these courses are available to anyone anywhere. This is also an opportunity for specialized subject area instructors with online course development skills to teach from home. They simply need to be certified by a college or state agency.
We primarily offer courses outside the sphere of core classes, such as fine arts, upper level sciences, languages, sociology, psychology, regional geography, creative writing, and career technology.
Courses are dyslexia friendly, each lesson including online video and podcasts. All texts are available in audio. Since students work independently, schools can position online course workstations in the back corners of regular education classrooms, libraries, or computer labs. We use all Open Source Software, so technology costs are low.
Materials are licensed under the Creative Commons License. The Moodle backup of each course will be available for free download at the end of the term. In this way we are participating in the Open Educational Resources Initiative.
